Position Overview
As an effective leader with an ability to engage others, the Indigenous Community Liaison Advisor works to develop and strengthen the City’s relationship with Indigenous people and communities as the City develops a path to understanding and reconciliation. Calling upon a deep understanding and knowledge of the experience of Indigenous peoples in Canada informed by lived experience and extensive and relevant work experience, the Indigenous Community Liaison Advisor recommends processes and initiatives that support the City of London in fulfilling its commitment to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and facilitates the City’s ability to align service delivery to the identified needs of Indigenous people and communities.
In keeping with the City’s commitment to dismantle racism and oppression experienced by Black and Indigenous people, other racialized peoples, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2+ communities, and women, the Indigenous Community Liaison Advisor reports to the Director, Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Unit, and works collaboratively with other members of the team to further develop systems, supports and accountabilities that will enable the Corporation to meet its strategic objectives. The Indigenous Community Liaison Advisor provides expertise and advice and assists City leaders and managers to promote accountabilities for measurable outcomes and to foster attitudes in support of diversity and inclusion in our workplace.
The Indigenous Community Liaison Advisor has an in-depth knowledge of the history, policies, governance, culture and demographics of local Indigenous communities, including Oneida Nation of the Thames, Chippewa of the Thames First Nation and Munsee-Delaware Nation, builds relationships with urban Indigenous organizations and Indigenous communities, engages service providers, facilitates conversations and consultations, attends key events, and leverages collaborative opportunities. The Indigenous Community Liaison Advisor monitors and provides advice on policy changes at the regional, provincial and national levels, ensuring strategic integration with the City of London’s community initiatives, and in a manner consistent with the recommendations of the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report.
